Sands Wellington-Hutt Valley is a voluntary organisation that provides support and information to parents and families following the loss of a baby or infant. Whether your baby died in pregnancy, around birth, as an infant or toddler, and no matter how your baby died, you are welcome and we offer our support.
We run support meetings in the community, we offer individual support on the phone or in person (when we can), we provide books and resources, and we hold events during Baby Loss Awareness Week and at other times throughout the year.
We provide Moses baskets, clothing, memory books and other memory items to Wellington and Hutt hospitals and to families in the community. We also run workshops for health and caring professionals in the community.
We are affiliated to Sands New Zealand and we're part of the network of Sands groups throughout the country who support bereaved parents, families and whānau. www.sands.org.nz
We do not receive any government funding to run our Sands group; we rely on grants and donations. Any contribution to our group, whether it is financial, or time offered or even just telling someone about us, is gratefully appreciated. Sands Wellington-Hutt Valley provides Moses baskets, clothing, bath packs, teddy bears and memory books to Wellington and Hutt hospitals for those families who have experienced the loss of a baby.
Many families are not prepared for such an event, so the baskets and clothing help them to parent their baby during the short time they have with them, whether they lived for a brief time or died before their birth. Families are always offered a choice of different clothing, wraps, blankets and items.
Joan Curle, a previous member of Sands WHV and a past Chairperson and Life Member of Sands NZ, started supplying and stocking the Moses baskets at Wellington Hospital over 30 years ago.
